Birthday letter

James,

You are 4! You are 4! You are way too cool to get excited by the Happy Birthday song (in fact, you scowl and look embarrassed when we sing it), but you enjoyed having cupcakes at school today anyway. The cupcakes were red. Very red. I was all set to bake something semi-nutritious and organic, but you saw red velvet cake mix at the store and were willing to take to the barricades for it. (Actually, they were delicious. That'll teach me to be the Sylvester Graham of the pastry shop!)

You can spell, draw people, dance, kick a soccer ball, and work the stereo, but your favorite thing to do is read. You'll read Elephant and Piggie books aloud to Thomas, but I've seen you reading more complicated books to yourself when you don't think anyone is looking.

When reading to Thomas, you are reasonably patient with his desire to insert his own ideas into the books: "No, Piggie is not saying 'God damn it.' She's saying 'You broke my new toy!' You shouldn't say that anyway, Thomas. It's not friendly."

You are a kind, considerate person with a shy streak. At one of our favorite restaurants, you are known as the kid who scowls or dives behind his parents when greeted ("I cannot win his heart," the hostess told me once), but you're careful to explain that you like everyone. "It makes me shy when all those people are looking. I'll say hi, but I might have to whisper it," you said.

You always know your own mind.

Most of all, you are our wonderful little guy. If I could have picked any kid in the world to have as my firstborn, it would have been you.
