James's thoughts on Rembrandt
At the National Gallery today James told me that Rembrandt's late self-portrait looked tired and sad, but friendly. Then we looked at a much earlier portrait of Saskia. I explained who she was and we talked about how you could see in the portrait that he loved her. "I think she made him laugh," said James.
Afterwards we went for ice cream in the waterfall cafe. Today there was cherry sorbet. James was crazy for it. Thomas and I shared a vanilla. Mas's progress was impeded by his insistence on using the little gelato shovel all by himself.
