The Christmas Tales

We drove to Atlanta for Christmas this year with James and Thomas. Thomas did a fabulous job with his first Christmas and calmly received attention from all and sundry. Unlike James, Thomas doesn't appear to be one of nature's mayors -- like his mom, he's a little more slow to warm up to new people -- but he does like people and did a great job with the crowds.

James had a fabulous time seeing Mimi, Clancy, and the whole Atlanta crew. His cousin Henry (who's 15 months old) was visiting from California, and James and Henry had a great time marching around the house together, taking it in turns (more or less) to push the popcorn popper toy. James and Henry also held excellent conversations featuring many English words, which were held at top volume. They sounded like two old men yelling at each other across a checkers table in a park.

James is speaking quite well now, and has been picking up new words about every five seconds. We had our first mixed blessing moment with that on Christmas afternoon: James was heading to bed for a nap when he slipped and banged into the windowsill. His reaction was not to start crying, but rather to shout "Oh my God -- MOM!"

Dave said: "What do you know? It's baby's first blasphemy!"

Oops.

Thomas is continuing to grow like a weed -- he's already sizing out of his 0-3 month clothes, and is shockingly long. He still makes his little chuffling noises from time to time (we've taken to calling him the Chuffle Bunny) and rarely cries unless he's unusually hungry or not being held. He's good company, especially for a six-week-old.

On the way back to DC last night, we stopped for dinner in Charlottesville. We'd been on the road for about 10 hours at this point, and tempers were beginning to fray. We walked into this Mexican restaurant with both kids in hysterics. The waiters could not have been nicer. Everyone calmed down, and James discovered his favorite sport...lucha libre. It was playing on the TV facing his seat. I've been trying pretty hard to keep his TV exposure to a minimum, and not to show him any screen violence at all, but I was not about to look a gift restaurant in the mouth. James was fascinated by the luchadors, and provided a running commentary throughout dinner. "Pow! Boom! Uh-oh! Bye."
