Knock, knock
Who's there?
Bundle of contradictions!
Bundle of contradictions who?
STOP THAT!
James is two and a half now, an age that most childcare books describe as a peak of disequilibrium and rebellion. This is true in his case, but his native sweetness keeps breaking through in unexpected ways.
The other week when we were at the beach James spent much of an afternoon snatching toys away from Thomas and yanking him around by the hair, then shouting "NO! Time-out SOON!" when I intervened.
I took him for a walk down the beach to distract him.
After a few minutes James spotted some birds and stopped in his tracks. He pointed to a little sandpiper: "Look, Mama! This bird is like Mas!" Indeed it was, scurrying around in its cheerful busyness.
"What bird is like you?" I asked, and James pointed to a small seagull a few feet down the beach. An apt comparison.
