Recent travels, round 5
We stayed in rooms above a pub in Dartmoor. Dartmoor was not as creepy as we'd been led to believe -- with modern street lights you don't have the spooky, isolated Hound of the Baskervilles experience -- but we were fascinated by the moor ponies. There are hundreds of feral ponies living out on Dartmoor. They mostly hide during the day, but if you drive into the moor at night you see dozens of ponies loitering around, and in some cases right in, the road.
Dartmoor also featured our favorite and most descriptive road sign to date: "Sheep Lying In Road."
They did just that.

Just to avoid misunderstandings.
There are no street lights on the moor itself, only in the villages.
If you leave your car and walk, you can be up to three miles from the nearest road, then you might find it a bit spooky.
The ponies are not feral, they are all owned by someone, and they are easy to find during the day.
How interesting. It's a misunderstanding I share with the Dartmoor signage committee, then, which warned us not to approach the "feral ponies."
Never seen that sign; who are the 'signage committee?
