Oooh, good times.
At least he figured it out on his own, and not through the malicious agency of a family member. (When my cousin Noelle was about James's age, my grandma taught her how to open the childproof gate at the top of the basement stairs. Grandma's reasoning: "it's not fair to keep her penned in like a dog." Everyone's response: "it's also not fair to let her FALL DOWN THE STAIRS AND DIE."
All was well in the end--Noelle made it through toddlerhood without incident.
Shh, Susan, don't say "fall down the stairs and die" -- we don't need to borrow trouble! :)
