Good Eatin’
As of Sunday night, James has passed a milestone that he himself sees as a big deal: no longer is he exclusively Mr. Milky, for he has started on solid food! Sunday dinner was rice cereal and breast milk.
A little apprehensive (or at least unsure what would happen) at first:

Quickly getting the picture:

“Bring the partridge!”

He even hungrily demanded seconds.
Speaking of food, I discovered today that the reason James had started fussing when I tried to give him a bottle was that he wanted to hold it himself.

He was not just relaxing with it in that photo; he was chugging away. Eventually he dropped it (and promptly wanted it back), and he has trouble with the fine art of getting the last bit out, but otherwise he tends to want control unless he's sleepy.
It's been an eventful few weeks for the little guy. After our beach trip, James started at daycare--a wonderful place named Small Savers after its home in the Office of Thrift Supervision, which happens to be right across the street from Augusta's office--and after a transition week, Augusta started back at work (part-time: Tuesday through Friday).
James took to daycare right away; he seems to really like both the staff and the other babies. The only downside has been epidemiological; the poor kid has had two colds and one bout of pinkeye, each of which he has passed on to one or both parents. But he has sprung back quickly (and we more or less quickly) from each, and he continues to grow like a weed. As of Friday (his four-month pediatric visit) he was 17 lbs., 3 oz., and 26.5″ (and that latter I think was with him not quite straight). As of today, he seems to be back to his happy and healthy self (modulo a lingering, but I hope improving, cough).
He's also figured out how to roll over (in both directions) quite reliably, to pivot around while on his tummy, and to grab what he wants, all of which make keeping an eye on him more difficult but also more entertaining. One of his latest exploits is to grab and hug (or wrestle) the bunny on his changing table:

Quite a big change from a matter of weeks ago, when the best he could do (try though he did, extensively) was the odd right hook:

Wow, James is getting big! Isn't it amazing how quickly they go from the sack-o'-potatoes stage to the mobile-but-undiscerning stage? :)
Good luck with going back to work, Augusta!
And I love that you use "modulo" in a blog about your baby. :D
Ah yes, the first cold. MJ's was a doozy, and nailed us both as well. Congrats on the solid food!
So cute!
The right hook picture is great, but only because Siena's doing that all the time too. I hope all that tai chi will benefit her in the future.
