A preview of the high school years
James and Thomas have begun interacting with each other, which is adorable to behold. Some of their games of the past few weeks have been giving us a foretaste of things to come.
Specifically:
1. James loves Elvis, and has a record of "Hound Dog" that he plays pretty much constantly. When the spirit moves him, he'll even sing along (surprisingly well for a toddler). He also dances along to the music. This morning Thomas was playing on a blanket in James's room while I got James dressed. Naturally, "Hound Dog" was on in the background. We looked up to find that Thomas was playing air guitar to the music (surprisingly well for an infant). He even swung his right arm around in that windmill maneuver beloved of middle school boys.
2. Like many people, James has been astonished to find recently that babies' digestive noises don't scale down to match their little bodies -- rather, babies burp, etc., just as loudly as adults. Louder, in fact, due to their total unselfconsciousness about these proceedings. The first few weeks that Thomas was home, James appeared to be searching for some way to recognize Thomas for these efforts.
Well, he's figured it out.
The other day, I was in the kitchen when Thomas (in his basket a few feet away) made a particularly noteworthy rude noise. James answered by blowing a long, loud raspberry. Then they both laughed like crazy. (I had to stick my head in a cabinet and rattle some pans around to cover up my own laughter.)
I assume this is all just the beginning...of the rest of our lives.
